  • New U.S. Census Bureau data show that the number of Americans without health insurance fell by a million people in 2021. Just over 8 percent (27.2 million) of Americans lacked health insurance at some point last year, compared to 8.8 percent (28.3 million) in 2020. Medicaid coverage increased to 19 percent; a 0.9 percent increase compared to 2020. The number of uninsured children also decreased from 2020 to 2021.
