  • The Kaiser Family Foundation released a new interactive providing key facts and trends about spending on Medicare. In 2020, Medicare benefit payments totaled $769 billion, representing 12 percent of the federal budget and 20 percent of national health care spending. Spending is projected to increase to nearly $1.5 trillion in 2031, due to growth in the Medicare population and increases in health care costs. According to the interactive, by 2060 the share of older adults who are in their 80 and older and 90 and older will also grow to one-third and 10 percent, respectively. (Interactive here)
