  • The CDC said that a new omicron subvariant is taking off in the United States and now makes up roughly 1 in 5 new COVID-19 cases. State health officials in New York estimate that the new variant, an offshoot of the dominant BA.2 version, is more transmissible than the earlier strain, but there is no evidence yet to suggest it causes more severe disease.
