Providers
  • A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that physicians’ emotional exhaustion and depersonalization scores declined from 2020 to 2021. Approximately 63 percent of physicians experienced at least one manifestation of burnout in 2021 – over a 60 percent increase compared to 2020 (38.2 percent). Physicians’ mean emotional exhaustion was also 38.6 percent higher in 2021 than in 2020. The study’s authors concluded that the pandemic’s chronic nature has “depleted healthcare workers’ emotional reserves,” and political skepticism toward vaccines and science has taken a toll on patient-provider relationships.
