  • The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned rulings that would have required United Behavioral Health (UBH) to reconsider its denials of tens of thousands of claims for mental health and substance use care. The previous rulings, issued in 2019 and 2020 by Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero, required UBH to adopt more stringent standards for mental health and substance use treatment and reprocess tens of thousands of claims. However, the appeals court concluded that UBH’s insurance policies allowed the company to use its own reasonable criteria for coverage. (Article here)
