  • The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its annual Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Prospective Payment System final rule, increasing payments for inpatient rehabilitation facilities by 3.9 percent in 2023. CMS estimates that total payments will increase by 3.2 percent, or $275 million, next year. The agency also finalized a permanent 5 percent cap on the annual wage index and requirements for facilities to collect patient assessment data on all patients effective October 1, 2024. The agency said the charges are intended to smooth year-to-year in providers’ wage index payments and provide a more complete picture of the quality of care provided to Medicare patients at these facilities, respectively.
