  • The Joint Economic Committee released a report indicating that gun violence costs the U.S. more than $1 billion a year in hospital bills. During a hearing on the economic impact of gun violence, experts clarified that the $1 billion cost is born most directly by victims and their families. They also noted that medical costs for victims of fatal firearm injuries totaled $290 million in 2020 and cost an average of $9,000 per patient, with much of the cost paid for by public health insurance providers such as Medicaid.
