- A new report from the Government Accountability Office found that the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) process for monitoring high-risk research on viruses and other agents that can cause pandemics does not meet the standards for effective oversight. The report – which comes as House Republicans plan to increase pressure on health agencies for their response to the pandemic – faults HHS for not fleshing out what work “reasonably anticipated to create, transfer, or use enhanced potential pandemic pathogens” under a 2017 framework should be subject to extra reviews.
