  • New data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) show that national health care spending grew by 2.7 percent to $4.3 trillion in 2021. Annual spending growth slowed last year compared with a 10.3 percent increase in 2020 when the federal government upped its spending in response to the pandemic. Employers’ health spending increased by 6.5 percent in 2021 after a 2.9 percent decline in 2020. Three-quarters of this spending was on premium contributions to employer-sponsored health plans.
