Opioid/Substance Use Disorders
  • A Legal Action Center study found that adding more coverage of substance use disorders (SUD) to Medicare will only slightly raise federal spending. Researchers found that if Medicare decided to extend coverage to include all SUD therapies, providers, and setting, it would incur another $1.9 billion in costs that include 58,890 counselor visits and 116,029 intensive outpatient episodes. However, the increase in costs to Medicare would be offset by lower costs for related health care conditions. (Press release here)
