Access & Coverage
  • A new Kaiser Family Foundation brief examines how states are adopting options to extend Medicaid postpartum coverage. According to the brief, 33 states and Washington, D.C have extended or have plans to extend Medicaid postpartum coverage to 12 months. Of those, 15 have received state plan amendment (SPA) approvals; four received Section 1115 waiver approvals; four announced that coverage extension has taken effect, although the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has not yet approved the SPAs in these states; and 11 announced plans to implement. The CMS approved Missouri’s limited 12-month extension to postpartum individuals with substance use disorders, but the state has paused implementation. Five of the 17 states not extending coverage have not expanded Medicaid. (Brief here)
