  • Nearly 4 million Medicaid recipients have lost coverage since the end of the public health emergency, but most of those were disenrolled due to procedural issues, not ineligibility. Such issues include misdirected paperwork, mistakes by state agencies, and other “red tape.” Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra sent a letter Friday to all governors encouraging them to bolster efforts to retain people on Medicaid. He particularly encouraged them to use electronic information from other federal programs, such as food stamps, to confirm people’s eligibility for Medicaid automatically.
