  • Representative Bill Pascrell, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight, called on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to investigate “disturbing questions about HCA’s corporate policies and practices.” Earlier this year, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) released a report indicating that HCA may have collected $1.8 billion in excess Medicare payments since 2008 because of medically unnecessary emergency department admissions. Pascrell also sent a letter to the hospital chain, asking whether doctors received incentives for patient admissions and how physician performance was measured. (Articles here and here)
