  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a proposal to menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. Menthol accounts for more than a third of cigarettes sold in the U.S., and the mint flavor is overwhelmingly favored by Black smokers and young people. The proposal, which comes a year after the agency announced the plan, still needs to be finalized and can take years to implement as it is likely to face stiff opposition from the tobacco industry. The FDA has attempted several times to get rid of menthol but faced pushback from Big Tobacco. (Articles here, here, here, here, and here)
