  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that cigarette sales increased in 2020 for the first time in 20 years. Major manufacturers in the U.S. sold 203.7 billion cigarettes in 2020, up from 202.9 billion in 2019. The FTC also noted that advertising and “promotional expenditures” for cigarettes increased from $7.62 billion in 2019 to $7.84 billion in 2020, with most of the money spent giving cigarette dealers price discounts to make cigarettes less expensive.
