- Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy defended the Biden administration’s new COVID-19 vaccination mandates, calling them “an appropriate legal measure” akin to other safety requirements for schools and workplaces. Republican governors and other critics have said President Joe Biden exceeded his legal authority with the new rules, but Murthy disagreed, saying “these are focused on areas where the federal government has legal authority to act.” Murthy also said Biden will announce new measures to slow the global spread of COVID-19 ahead of a United Nations General Assembly meeting.
