- U.S. health officials said Sunday that early indications suggest the omicron COVID-19 variant may be less dangerous than the delta variant. However, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that scientists need more information before drawing conclusions. “Thus far, it does not look like there’s a great degree of severity to it,” Fauci said. “But we have really got to be careful before we make any determinations that it is less severe or it really doesn’t cause any severe illness, comparable to delta.” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said that at least 15 states have detected the omicron variant and that number is expected to rise.
